A development of a building material information system using product- modeling approach

This paper presents a building material information system that helps construction manufacturers, architects and builders to manage building material information quickly and precisely throughout the life-cycle of a product. In the construction industry, it is getting more difficult to manage all the building resources for design and construction due to the rapid development of construction technology and new construction materials. In this study, a prototypical building material information system, BMIS, has been suggested. The system intends to have 1) a data model that is classified based on UNICLASS and structured using STEP (Standard for The Exchange of Product model data) methodology has been developed, 2) a database control module to efficiently manage the information system has been developed, 3) and a information exchange environment has been devised. In this study, a desirable way of a seamless and continuous working environment for manufactures, architects and constructors throughout of the building material/components has been suggested.
